Ophidian Mambo No.2: A Compact Floorstander with Big Sound
The Ophidian Mambo No.2 is a compact 2.5-way floorstanding loudspeaker that defies expectations with its impressive performance and refined design. Crafted in Sheffield, UK, this speaker is engineered to deliver a full-range sound experience in spaces where larger speakers might not fit.
Design and Build
Standing at just under 900mm tall, the Mambo No.2 features a slim profile with a width of 158mm and depth of 191mm, making it one of the most compact floorstanders available. The cabinet is constructed from braced plywood and finished in real wood veneers—either oak or walnut—providing both aesthetic appeal and structural integrity. The speaker comes with detachable magnetic grilles for a clean front look.
Innovative Driver Configuration
At the heart of the Mambo No.2's design are its dual 115mm coated paper midbass drivers, complemented by a hidden third 115mm bass driver inside the cabinet. This unique configuration, combined with Ophidian's proprietary AEROFLEX port system, allows the speaker to produce deep and controlled bass notes that belie its compact size. The AEROFLEX system minimizes port velocity, reducing unwanted noise and enabling placement near walls without compromising bass performance.
High-Fidelity Sound
The Mambo No.2 is equipped with a 27mm neodymium high-frequency unit featuring a Sonolex-coated fabric diaphragm. This tweeter offers excellent dispersion characteristics, ensuring seamless integration with the midbass drivers for lifelike and realistic sound reproduction. The speaker's frequency response spans from 38Hz to 25kHz (-3dB), with a sensitivity of 87dB and an impedance of 4 ohms, making it suitable for a wide range of amplifiers.
Performance and Reception
Despite its compact dimensions, the Mambo No.2 delivers a soundstage and bass response that rivals larger speakers. HiFi Pig magazine praised the Mambo No.2, noting that it "manages to perform beyond its tiny dimensions with regards to its soundstaging abilities and bass performance." The speaker's balanced frequency response and tight bass make it an excellent choice for those seeking high-quality sound in limited spaces.
